2nd XV
Season 2008-2009
Saturday 4th October
Result
Portadown 2XV - 46
Rainey Endowed 2XV - 0
After one win out of five, Rainey were out to improve. On a cold, blustery day in Portadown the players were anticipating a tough match. The players got ready for the match and were motivated by their new captain Ryan Young and vice captain Matthew O’Hare.
The match began positively with Rainey scrumming superbly and giving quick ball to the backs. The Rainey backs found it hard to break through the strong Portadown backline and early on they got a score of their own. Several injuries came in the first half with Scrum Half Justin Taylor being taken off with a nasty hand injury and Steven Nelson having to come off after a suspected broken wrist. This seemed to knock down the confidence in the players as Portadown scored two tries in quick succession. Just before half time Reuel Thompson made a superb run down the line finding a rare gap in the Portadown defence and grubbered through only for the full back to make a vital kick.
Half time:
Portadown 22
Rainey 0
In the second half Portadown pressured Rainey as soon as the whistle blew and they used the wind to their advantage. It was a matter of time before they got their 5th try of the match only 5 minutes into the second half. Portadown then got more tries in over a quick period of time due to missed tackles. Good performances from Captain Ryan Young, who made some tremendous tackles, Ultan Connery stealing the ball off the lineout numerous times and made ground with some good runs. Reuel Thompson also showed his quality with a great run superb ball handling.
Overall, I think the players will learn from their mistakes and will be able to overcome them to ensure a better performance next Saturday against Larne Grammar.
